Officer Fred J. Armes, DSN 2973, received his commission on 04/28/1958 and entered the academy for the Saint Louis Metropolitan Police Department. After completion of the academy, he served in the following districts and divisions throughout his career: They were the 3Rd, Bureau of Field Operation's (B.F.O.), 3Rd, 2Nd, 3Rd, Robbery & Burglary Division, and finally the Warrant & Fugitive Section. During his career, he was awarded an Honorable Mention on 06/01/1961, and 5 Chief's Letters of Commendation for police work above the call of duty on 02/01/1967, 07/01/1970, 01/04/1974, 04/25/1975, and 09/27/1978. Officer Armes retired on a non-work related (NWR) disability on March 1, 1980, having served 18.77 years of faithful and dedicated service to the department. After his retirement, Officer Armes became the Sheriff of the Butler County Sheriff's Department. Officer Fred Armes was the uncle to Detective Kurt Batting, DSN 3054, Assigned to 2nd District Bureau and Father in Law to retired Sergeant Anthony Lachenicht, DSN 1420.

Fred Armes, 84, of Poplar Bluff, MO, died Monday, June 8, 2015, at the Mark Twain Caring Center in Poplar Bluff.

Mr. Armes was born on May 23, 1931, in Poplar Bluff, to the late Fred Joe and Thelma McIver Armes. He retired in 1980 as a law enforcement officer with the St. Louis Police Metropolitan Police Department. From 1989 to 1990, he served as interim sheriff for Butler County, MO, and was elected as sheriff in 1993, serving until 1999. Mr. Armes was a member of Masonic Lodge # 209; was a member of the Poplar Bluff Rotary Club; and was a member of the International Chiefs of Police, the St. Louis Police Veterans Association, the St. Louis Police Officer's Association, and the Missouri Sheriff's Association. He loved to spend time with his children and grandchildren, and enjoyed landscaping, working in his yard and tormenting his brother.

On Jan. 14, 1950, he married Doris B. Hart in Pocahontas, Ark. She preceded him in death on June 29, 2009.

Other survivors include two children: Deborah Bramer of St. Louis and Rebecca (Anthony) Lachenicht of Wildwood, Mo.; three grandchildren: Scott (Autumn) Bramer, Elizabeth (Sam) Pitlyk and Timothy (Samantha) Lachenicht; two great-grandchildren: Jace Timothy Lachenicht and Lynkin Caleb Bramer; a sister, Patricia (Donald) Battig of St. Louis; one brother, Tom (Patricia) Armes of Poplar Bluff; and sister-in-laws; Marge Armes, Kathy Armes and Linda Davidson, all of Poplar Bluff and was an uncle, great uncle and cousin to many.

Mr. Armes was also preceded in death by a son, Michael Armes, and four brothers, Bob Armes, Ed Armes and wife, Grace, Larry Armes, and Jack Armes.

A Masonic Service will begin at 6 p.m. Wednesday at Cotrell Funeral Chapel with visitation following until 8 p.m. The funeral service will be at 10 a.m. Thursday in the funeral chapel with the Rev. Austin Armes officiating. Burial will follow at the City Cemetery in Poplar Bluff.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Masonic Home of Missouri, 6033 Masonic Dr., #A, Columbia, MO 65202 or to The Alzheimer's Association, 1630 W. Elfindale St., Springfield, MO 65807.
