She married Karl Martel in Menno, South Dakota on 10 January 1907. Together they had six children: Frederick, Gustoph, Lydia, Emilia, Magdalena and Theodore. After their first child, Fred, was born, they moved near Lehr, North Dakota.
Sophie died 7 months after having her youngest child, Ted. Her obituary appeared in the "Ashley Tribune," Friday, December 17, 1915, page 4.
"On Monday last Mrs. Carl Martell past away, having been ill for some months with consumption. Mrs. Martell was 32 years old and emigrated here from Russia. She was buried in the Lehr cemetery on Wednesday."
