A silversmith from County Wexford Ireland,he moved to Baltimore in 1771. At the time of the revolution he had enough precious metals on hand to serve as a banker and invest in real estate development. He married Margaret 'Peggy' Sanderson 1760-1825.

They had fifteen children, only five of which survived to adulthood.
