Betty Jean Cole, 78, formerly of Albany, died Wednesday in Redding, Calif.

She was born in Lebanon, the daughter of George W. and Elsie (Beckner) Sturgis Sr. She attended Albany schools. She had lived in Portland before moving to Redding.

Betty was a member of the American Legion Auxiliary, the Eagles Lodge and the Redding Moose Lodge. She enjoyed crocheting and owned her own shop. She was a shirt presser for a laundry service for 15 years. She enjoyed bowling, darts and gardening.

Betty is survived by children Billy Jack Christopher of Lebanon, Carol Floyd of Red Bluff, Calif., and Frederick L. McGee Jr. of Oregon City; five grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and brother George W. Sturgis Jr. of Springfield.
