Edith Vickery was a daughter of John Vickery (d. circa 1832) and his wife Bethia, maiden name unknown, of Randolph County, NC. Her paternal grandfather was Rev. Marmaduke Vickery, who was a well known minister of his era. Accounts vary as to whether Edith was born in 1786 or 1789.

In 1811, Edith married John Sherwood (1791-1865) in Randolph County, NC. He was a son of Daniel Sherwood III and his wife Frances Linthicum, originally from Maryland, who had come to Guilford Co., NC in the 1780s.

In a letter to one of their grandsons, many years after their deaths, Lyndon Swaim, a close friend of John & Edith's son, Rev. John Milton Sherwood, wrote of John & Edith that they "enjoyed the respect and esteem of their neighbors...His father (John) was a man of shrewd and superior mind; his mother (Edith) industrious, kind-hearted, affectionate. I knew them both well." (Many thanks to Steve Sherwood, a descendant, for the transcript of the letter.)

John and Edith had a number of children. I am still researching their family. So far I've got:

Mary Sherwood m. Jesse Davidson in 1838, not sure about her.

Rachel Sherwood (c. 1815) m. Hugh Davidson in 1838.

Rev. John Milton Sherwood (1822-1872) married Sarah Dewey (1828-1881) in 1855. He was a newspaper publisher early in life and then became a Presbyterian minister.

Elizabeth Sherwood (c. 1823) may have married Stanley Frazier.

Daniel N. Sherwood (c. 1827-aft. 1880) married Anna Minerva Whittington (c. 1833-1897) in 1859. He was a text book printer in Greensboro in 1862.

Martha Edith Sherwood (1829-1907) m. James McAdams.

Joshua B. Sherwood (c. 1832-c. 1861).

John died of consumption (tuberculosis) in 1865, and Edith died the next year (1866) of heart failure. I am afraid I do not know the exact dates, or where they are buried.

I will add more information when I find it.
