OKOLONA - Durell Reid Prewett, 93, died Friday, Jan. 23, 2009, at the Shearer-Richardson Nursin Center in Okolona. He was born Feb. 24, 1915, in the Robbs Community of Pontotoc County, the only son of the late Asbury Prewett and Edna Bray Prewett. He had been retired from Futorian Furniture Company for several years. He was a faithful member of the First Baptist Church of Okolona. Reid served briefly in the U.S. Army and married the love of his life, Ruth Jolly on Aug. 28, 1948. He was devoted to Ruth and her wish was his desire. It wasn't anything unusual to see him in the kitchen helping her by chopping vegetables or cleaning up the dishes after a meal. He was famous for his "Reid Burgers", the name given to those wonderful hamburgers he made. Almost every afternoon, he could be seen taking Ruth riding. He loved his and Ruth's family. They always visited those who were sick or shut in. Reid was a member of the Baptist Church and Ruth of the Methodist. Every Sunday morning, Reid would drive up to the Methodist Church and let Ruth out, then go on to his Church where he faithfully served until his health began to fail. On Sunday nights, Ruth and Reid went to the Baptist church to worship and Wednesday nights, they went to the Methodist church for prayer service. Many people wondered how they got along so well belonging to different churches. Their love and respect for each other and their devotion to serving the Lord was the answer. Reid was a member of the Prairie Masonic Lodge #81 in Okolona for many years.
