Abraham and Catharine lived on a farm in Gettysburg which would become known as the Trostle Farm. It was inherited by Catharine from Abraham's father, Peter. She would then pass it on to her son George who then sold it to the Gettysburg National Military Park.

The farm was engulfed by combat during the Battle of Gettysburg. Major General Sickles set up a field headquarters in front of their farm house. The house became a field hospital from July 2nd to July 4th. Abraham and his son George rode out the battle in their home while Catharine took the rest of the children to a relative's house in Hanover and returned on July 6 to find their yard was full of dead soldiers and horses and most of their crops destroyed.
