He recorded his first family in German in the Old Pilgrim Church records, and his 2nd family in English. His wife Elizabeth taught the slaves of their plantation, and those of his father's, to read and write in both English and German. Upon his father's death, he inherited one of his two plantations, and his brother John David the other.
