Nickname = Betsy
Wife of William Hill Hunt
Birth date = about 1796 in Rowan County, North Carolina
Children = James (1761-1838), Jonathan (1766-1833), Mary (?-?), Timothy (1771-1823), Rebecca (?-?), George (1775-1842), John (1777-1851), Sarah Hunt Sedgwick (1779-1843), Smith (1782-1855), William Hill (1785-1842), Nancy Hunt Wyatt (1787-1822), Catherine Hunt Bradbury (1788-1843), Charles Jr. (?-?), and Stephan Ganoe (1795-1837).

Elizabeth "Betsy" Estep was born around 1896 in Rowan County, North Carolina. Her father was Isaac Esteb and her mother was Ruth Moore Esteb.

Betsy married William Hill Hunt on 12 January 1813, in Wayne County , Indiana Territory. Their fathers, Charles Hunt and Isaac Esteb, were good friends and neighbors. The marriage was performed by Lazarus Whitehead, first pastor of the Baptist Church at the Elkhorn Settlement South of Richmond, in Wayne County, Indiana It’s likely that William and Betsy had met in North Carolina although, being 14 years younger than William, as Betsy was but a small child at the time. She was only about 10± years old at the time the Estebs and Hunts moved to Indiana. She was only about 17 at the time of her marriage while William was a much older 28 years.

William and Betsy had 14 children: Richard (?-?), Stephen (?-?), Timothy (?-?), Stephen Genoe (1813-1869, probably named after William’s brother Stephen Gano), Nancy M. (1815-1852), James (1816-1833, possibly named after William’s oldest brother, James), George S. (1817-1855, possibly named after brother George), Isaac E. “Ike” (1819-1864, possibly named after Betsy’s father), Timothy S. (1825-1881, named after William’s brother Timothy?), John A. (1827-1910, named after William’s brother?), James L. (1829-?), Charles Moore (1831-1902, middle name after Betsy’s mother’s maiden name), Richard (1836-?), and Sarah (1837-1857, named after William’s older sister?).

The family moved to LaPorte County, Indiana, between 1837 and 1840.

Betsy was widowed in 1842 when her husband, William H. Hunt, died on April 14 at the age of 57. He was buried under a marble headstone in Wills Township Baptist Cemetery at Rolling Prairie, in La Porte County. His worn headstone reads:

When I shall awake
A pure image of thee
Before I shall break
This tomb and be free

After William’s death, Elizabeth lived in Wills, La Porte County. In 1850, she was living with her son Timothy S. (25), daughter-in-law Emiline (23), and sons James L. (21), Charles M (19), and Richard T. (14).

Ten years later, Betsy was living with her son Richard and his wife Minerva in Wyoming, Lee County, Illinois, along with a 13 year old boy named Emmet Morse (Minerva’s brother?). The nearest post office was Paw Paw.
