GERTRUDE CAROLINE LEVANEN

Gertrude Caroline Levanen passed away peacefully in living faith on May 16, 2015 at 101 years of age, in Battle Ground, Washington. She was born August 6, 1913, in Quincy, Oregon, to Anna and John Ek, both Finnish immigrants. The family moved to Mist, Oregon, where she attended Mist Elementary. She graduated from Vernonia High School in Vernonia, Oregon and from Ellensburg College in Ellensburg, Washington, where she received a teaching certificate.

In 1941, she married Lavey "Butch" Levanen and they were married for 60 years. He passed away in 2001.

Gertrude is survived by her daughter, Jane Alice Day; grandchildren, Caroline Johnson, Derek Long and Summer Long; a great-grandson, Jarold Bisconer; and sisters, Elizabeth Lindberg and Louise Homola.

She was preceded in death by six siblings: Rachael Kaarto, Ellen Paso, Anne Hendrickson, Leonard Ek, Ruth Charlson and Walter Ek.

Gertrude and Butch lived for many years in Brush Prairie, Washington. They loved to travel to Scandinavia and all over the U.S., visiting their many friends. She was an elementary school teacher and she later enjoyed teaching others to make braided rugs, making many beautiful rugs herself. Gertrude and Butch were very social and loved to entertain friends in their home.

Funeral services were on Thursday, May 21, 2015 at the Old Apostolic Lutheran Church, 16603 N.E. 142nd Ave., Brush Prairie, with viewing on Wednesday, May 20, 2015 at the church. All were welcome.
