Not yet a Captain! Sgt. William Hamilton Storkey, V cropped from a 1955 group photo of the day shift.

This small article from The Oregonian of September 30, 1926 was the only reference I could find to my grandpa's sailing trip as a youngster of age 15. The date of arrival cited in the article matches my grandpa's journal of the trip exactly. Many years later as an adult he said he could vividly recall the smell of the fresh cut lumber.

The Columbia River Paper Mills company was actually begun to provide pulp for paper for the Oregonian.

Sgt. William H. Storkey at Eastern State Penitentiary, presumably before 1956 (see below why). On the back it had been written that he was here on "on B Block" but I think I mis-read the writing and it is 13 Block. On December 23, 2011, I visited the penitentiary and the blocks are all numeric. "13" would make sense for this photo, as you can see it is a building of at least two stories; while the original buildings were one floor, the later buildings were two stories to accomodate more prisoners, and they were numbered as they were built, so this was among the last - only blocks 14 and 15 (death row) would follow.

If you look above my grandpa's head you can see the skylights built into the vaulted top of the roof, as natural lighting was used throughout the facility (the original buildings of which were from 1829). Behind him you can see the doors to the individual cells.

Later in his career, my grandpa would work at Graterford Prison (later called Graterford SCI, State Correctional Institution) on death row, where he was a Captain, but I did not know his responsibilities as Sergeant at the time of this picture until I found a long history of the Penitentiary and its buildings. Here's what it said about where he is pictured, Block 13:

"Block 13 was presumably commenced between the start of block 12 (1909) and of block 14 (1926). An early mention of its use came in May 1926. It was not a separate building, but an attached range of cells built along the northeastern flank of block 10. This was the most severe punishment block, sometimes called (with others at various times) "Klondike" or "the hole." Following a 1931 visit, it was described as comprising ten dark, poorly ventilated solitary cells and a bath or shower at one end. In 1938 the cells were said to measure 4 by 8 by 8 feet, each with an iron bed, a ventilating hole one foot in diameter, and no lights. There was a radiator and running water in each cell.

Inmates being punished were kept here for periods up to 30 days, usually much less, and they were otherwise sent to two other punishment/segregation areas, where they did not participate in yard-out or eat in the dining halls with the rest of the population. It appears that the other two areas were block 1 and the gallery of block 4 or block 5. In August 1953 a state penal investigating committee recommended that solitary confinement cells, presumably these, be eliminated. A new building, block 15 was commenced in 1956, and when it opened in June 1959, block 13 was closed."

My grandpa, Wm. Hamilton Storkey V is top row, second from left, age 13. At the top right corner is his good friend Reds McMullen, aka William McMullen. I had known this name since March of 2012, and had never been able to trace Reds. In September 2013, I got a note from kind contributor Ken Gilbert about another matter, and by chance he mentioned his cousin's name, whose surname was McMullen. Long story short, we confirmed the connection, and Reds is here.

The photo is mounted in a heavy cardboard frame, with names on the back in pencil, which time has worn. As best as can be deciphered:

The Historical Society of Pennsylvania said this about Seeger on their website: "David Seeger was a Philadelphia photographer. In the 1930s, his Seeger Studio was located at 4384 Main Street in the Manayunk neighborhood of Philadelphia. Apparently, the studio later moved to 6070 Ridge Avenue in the adjoining Roxborough neighborhood."
