After his Mary Ellen Cangley's death shortly after his birth, Nick and his brother, Edward, were taken in by the family of James and Bridget Farley Gainer, who had no living children of their own. The Gainer family later adopted the Cangley boys.
John W. Cangley traveled throughout Canada and the Great Lakes region occasionally returning to the area to visit until he passed in 1940.

Augustine (Nick) Gainer, 88, of Dushore, died January 31, 1986, at Memorial Hospital, Towanda. He was born in Cherry Mills, Cherry township, February 13, 1897, a son of James and Bridget Farley Gainer.
For most of his life Mr. Gainer was a dairy farmer, but also kept a nice flock of sheep. He also worked for Pennsylvania Department of Highways before his retirement.
He was a member of St. Basil’s Roman Catholic Church and its Holy Name Society.
Surviving are his wife the former Margaret Sick of Dushore, whom he married November 21, 1921; three sons, Eugene of New Alexandria, PA, William of Endicott, NY and John of Dushore; two daughters Mrs. Rosemary Walsh of Dushore and Mrs. Jo Ann Merge of Pittsburgh; 16 grandchildren; six great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were held February 3 from the P. Dean Homer Funeral Home, Dushore, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial in St. Basil’s Church. Rev. William J. Karle Officiated. Burial was in the parish cemetery.
Memorials may be directed to the Dushore Ambulance Association.
