Edward was born as Edward Francis Cangley in Colley Township on August 6, 1894. His biological parents were John W. Cangley and Mary Ellen Stafford.

After his Mary Ellen Cangley's death in 1897, Edward and his brother, Augustine, were taken in by the family of James and Bridget Farley Gainer, who had no living children of their own. The Gainer family later adopted the Cangley boys.

John W. Cangley traveled throughout Canada and the Great Lakes region occasionally returning to the area to visit until he passed in 1940.
