According to the "History of Chester County, Pennsylvania, With Genealogical and Biographical Sketches," By J. Smith Futhey and Gilbert Cope, Philadelphia: Louis H. Everts, 1881, page 781, the first John Young came from England and purchased land in West Bradford Township about 1744. He married Elizabeth Woodward, a daughter of Richard Woodward of West Bradford Township and the widow of Thomas Thornbury. His son, John, Jr., married Rebecca Sheward, a daughter of Thomas and Ruth Sheward. A son of John and Rebecca (Sheward) Young, also named John, married Ann Woodward, and second, Mary Gray. He had nine children with his first wife and seven with his second wife.
By his will, signed on 13 Aug 1860 and probated on 30 Jun 1865, he provided for his wife Mary and his sons: Joseph, George, James, and Wilson. He also provided for his daughters Rachel Leslie, Ruth Ann Guthrie, and Rebecca Jane Young. In addition, provision was made for his granddaughter Mary Phebe Young (daughter of his son George and his first wife Emily J. Maxton) and his granddaughter Sidney W. Pierce, daughter of his late daughter, Sidney Young and Joshua N. Pierce (Sidney and Joshua married in Chester County on 14 Oct 1847; Sidney later died on 28 Oct 1850).
