Elwood F. Barney, 74, South Bombay, former town of Bombay employee and World War II veteran, died Sunday at Massena Memorial Hospital, where he had been a patient since Wednesday.

The funeral will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Flint Funeral Home, Moira, with the Rev. Donald Alexander officiating. Burial will be in Fairview Cemetery, Dickinson Center.

Calling hours are from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. today at the funeral home.

Memorial donations may be made to the Bombay Fire and Rescue Department or to the Senior Citizens Center, Fort Covington.

Surviving are his wife, Doris; four sons, Fay, Fort Covington, James, Bombay, Ronald, Lake Titus, and Randy, Evans Mills; a daughter, Mrs. David (Bonnie) Pelkey, Massena; two sisters, Rita Johnson, Fort Covington, and Mrs. Kermit (Audrey) Rockhill, Constable; 15 grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.

A sister, Ruth Robinson, died April 6, and a brother died at birth.

Born Oct. 10, 1921, at Bombay, son of Ernest and Anna Collette Barney, he attended school in the Bombay area and was a paratrooper during World War II.

In earlier years, he worked on area farms and was one of the original employees at Moon Valley Ski Lodge.

He married Doris Johnson on Dec. 24, 1944, at Moira with the Rev. Robert Mallebar officiating.

Mr. Barney worked for Johnson Decorators of Malone and was employed by the town of Bombay until his retirement in 1977.

He was a member of the Masonic Aurora Lodge 383 and Order of the Eastern Star Chapter 392, both in Fort Covington, a past member of the Bombay Fire Department and served on the board of directors for the Fort Covington Senior Citizens Center.
