BYRUM, Lorna O. was born on August 3, 1930 to Stanley and Opal Diltz at Dr. William B. Quinns Hospital in Springfield, Ohio. She died Monday, November 3, 2008 at Miami Valley Hospital, Dayton, Ohio. She attended Springfield public schools until the sixth grade when her parents moved to Champaign County, Ohio where she graduated from Westville High School. After graduation she married Daniel A. Byrum of Enon, Ohio. They had one daughter, Dawn. Lorna exhibited extraordinary artistic talent at a very early age and continued this interest throughout her life. She was one of the very first students to enroll in a new University that had been built in a cornfield called Wright State and because Allyn Hall didnt contain rooms for artists, she took some of her preliminary drawing and painting classes at Dayton Art Institute. When her husband was transferred from Wright Patterson Air Force Base to Battlecreek, Michigan, she continued her work towards and earned her Bachelor of Arts Degree Cum Laude from Western Michig
an University in Kalamazoo, Michigan. Before her husband died she taught art in the Michigan public school system for three years. After his death, she returned to Ohio and made Dayton her home. Lornas artistic expertise was not limited to just drawing and painting. She found distinct pleasure in creating in a veritable feast of media: jewelry making, sculpting, working in enamel, ceramics, making and playing musical instruments, wood carving, printmaking, screen printing and the list can go on. Until the day she became ill she was still working on a painting of a landscape of her most beloved place: the coast of Maine. She also developed a discerning appreciation of the rich and colorful Southwestern Native American cultural arts since her daughter, son-in-law and grandson made their home in southern New Mexico. She was preceded in death by her husband Daniel Alonzo Byrum and her parents. She is survived by her only daughter and son-in-law, Dawn and Allen Jones, of Anthony, New Mexico and her grandson Andrew
Jones of Seattle, Washington. She also leaves three sisters: Laurel Herminghausen of Dayton, Oh., Jacqueline Dunn of Albuquerque, New Mexico & Cecily Morrow of Springfield, Oh. & numerous nieces and nephews. Service was held 3-5pm November 5, at Miami Valley Unitarian Universalist Fellowship. Family & friends may make contributions in Lorna's memory to children's programs at the Dayton Art Institute or to charity of choice.
