Joe’s family moved to Texarkana and he completed his education by graduating from Arkansas High School in 1946. After this he proudly served two years in the United States Navy and then returned home to attend Texarkana College.
In 1950, he met and married the love of his life, Mary Ruth Blalock. They remained constant companions for over 65 years. Joe and Mary had three sons, Joe Jr., Keith and Christopher. He also had five grandchildren and one great grandson.
Joe worked for International Harvester for many years and in the trucking business for his entire career. This led him to Wichita Falls and Dallas, Texas and eventually back to Texarkana. Joe was an avid outdoorsman and loved to fish, hunt, cookout, pitch washers and work in the garden. Spending time with his family was his greatest treasure with cookouts and holidays becoming large family gatherings. Joe was also a 32 degree Scottish Rite Mason and a member of Unity Baptist Church.
Joe is survived by his wife of 65 years, Mary Ruth and by sons Joe Burns, Jr. and Keith Burns, both of Texarkana. He was preceded in death by his youngest son, Christopher in 1992 and his daughter-in-law Patty Burns in 2003. He is also survived by grandchildren, Susan Jenkins and husband Mark of Wolfe City Texas, T.J. Burns and wife Kyla of Royse City Texas, Laura Merritt and husband Chris of Rockwall Texas, Corey Baumann and husband Joey of Denver, Colorado and Cody Burns of Texarkana, Texas and great grandson, Jacob Burns of Royse City, Texas.
Everyone that met Joe instantly liked him and his friends are too numerous to count. As the old saying goes “No man is a failure that has friends”, Joe definitely had friends!
