James was the son of Peter Ruark and Francis Smith. He married Dora Belle Foxworthy on Sept 22, 1878 in Carroll Co, IA. They were the parents of 4 daughters: Olive Valentine, Zelma Jasmine, Edna Belle, and Venus Effie.


November 26, 1937 - Carroll Daily Herald - More Sketches About Carroll's Older Citizens - James P. Ruark of Scranton, father of Mrs. C.M. Bayliss of Carroll, came to Richland township, Carroll county, 58 years ago. He is now 80 years old.

Mr. Ruark, whose father was Irish and his mother, We1ch, was born Oct. 4 , 1857 at Confidence, Wayne county, Iowa. He spent his boyhood in Wayne county, which is in southern Iowa. From that community he came to Carroll county on horseback, following the trails. He bought land from the government, just one mile from the Star church in Richland Township.

He broke the land himself as everything was unfenced prairie. The town of Glidden had been started at that time and he helped haul lumber from Glidden to build the first lumber yard at Coon Rapids. Until his retirement from farming last April, when he moved to Scranton. Mr. Ruark had lived in Carroll county from the time of his arrival here in 1878.

On September 22, 1878, Mr. Ruark was married to Miss Dora Belle Foxworthy, who passed away March 17, 1928. Mr. and Mrs. Ruark had four children. One daughter, Mrs. Edna Turner, of Rippey, Ia., died March 6, l937, at the age of 55 after suffering a paralytic stroke.

The living children are: Mrs. Olive Plumley, Ralston; Mrs. Venus Bayliss, Carroll, and Miss Zelma Ruark, who lives with her father at Scranton.

Mr. Ruark is one of a family of six children, all of whom are living. The other five are: Mrs. Hawk, Promise City, Ia.; Mrs. Belle Green, Corydon, Ia.; I.N. Ruark, Garden Grove, Ia.; George Ruark, Melrose, Ia.; and Ed Ruark, Seymour, Ia.
