Obituary from The Reporter, Churdan, Iowa, April 16, 1915:
Nancy J. Fitz was born April 1st, 1839, at Zanesville, Ohio, and departed this life after an illness of about one week April 4th 1915, at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Henry Willard, Spirit Lake, Iowa, at the age of 76 years and 3 days. She moved with her parents to Linn County, Iowa, at the age of fourteen. Was united in marriage to George W. Waters, November 4th, 1858. To this union was born three children Mrs. Sarah A. Willard, of Spirit Lake, Iowa, a son who died in infancy, and Mrs. Cora V. Stotts, of Kanawha, Iowa. This husband answered the call of his country and died 1863, and again she was united in marriage to Alexander M. Smith March 19th, 1868, to this union was born eight children. Robert H. Smith, of Churdan, Iowa, a pair of twins who died in infancy; Lettie L. Clipperton, of Ontario, California; Nellie Jane Clipperton, of Churdan, Iowa; Ida B. Smith who died at the age of sixteen; a son who died in infancy and Minta E. Flack, of Pasadena, California. She was again united in marriage to Edmond Carney who passed away, and later was married to H.D. Rogers, who has passed to the world beyond. She was convered at the age of twelve years and united with the M.E. Church and in later years she united with the Free Mtthodist [sic] Church in which she has been a faithfull member for thirty years. All of her children were present at her death but the two children in California. The funeral services were conducted by Bev. G.B. Ingram, of Boone, in the Free Methodist Church in Churdan and the remains laid to rest in the Highland Cemetery.
