DRAKE, Virginia Garrison, of Lexington, died Friday, October 22, 1999, at her home. She was born in Newton, N.C. and raised in Harrisonburg, Va., the daughter of the late Mary Fletcher and the Rev. J. Silor Garrison, the long-time pastor of St. Stephens Reform Church there. She is survived by her husband of 60 years, G. Francis Drake and four children, Sarah D. Sessoms, Peter G. Drake and Anne D. McClung, all of Lexington and Thomas F. Drake of Fuquay-Varina, N.C. an their families. She took special pride in her six grandchildren, Katherine S. Mangum, Sarah S. Richardson, Thomas F. Drake, Jr., all of Richmond, William G. Drake of Lexington, Dr. W. Lyle McClung of Nome, AK, Hunter McClung of Gunnison, CO ; and three great-grandchildren, Emma S. Richardson, Bruin S. Richardson, IV of Richmond and Jordan Drake of Lexington. She came to Lexington in 1940 when her husband commenced a 43 years teaching career in the Romance Language Department of Washington and Lee University. A devoted faculty wife, she entertained countless students and alumni of the university for more than half a century. She was an early supporter of the first Children's Clinic in Lexington, was an active volunteer at the R. E. Lee Memorial Episcopal Church and the Stonewall Jackson Hospital Auxiliary. For many years, she was the nurse and dietician at Camp Strawderman near Woodstock, Va. A graveside service will be conducted at Stonewall Jackson Cemetery in Lexington on Monday, October 25, 1999 at 11:30 a.m. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations are suggested to Rockbridge Area Free Clinic or to Rockbridge Area Hospice. The family will receive friends from 4 to 6 p.m. Sunday, October 24, 1999, at the home, 421 Honeysuckle Hill, Lexington, Va. Arrangements are by Lomax Funeral Home, Buena Vista. The Roanoke Times (VA) dated 24 Oct 1999.

Wife of Dr. G. Francis Drake. Shared gravestone has a fleur de lis and a cross. She was a nurse and her husband taught French.
