According to the "Genealogical and Memorial History of the State of New Jersey, Volume 6," by Francis Bazley Lee, Dr. Reiley was also the "acting brigade-surgeon of the First Brigade, Third Division, Seventh Army Corps" at one point during the Civil War. The publication also states that "he served with honor and distinction, attaining his rapid promotion through his professional merit only… With the Thirty-Third [N.J. Inf.] Dr. Reiley was in the 'March to the Sea' and in all the hard campaigns."
Reiley, who was born in Durham, Bucks Co., P.A. but raised in Greenwich Township, Warren Co., N.J., was an 1849 graduate of Union College in Schenectady, New York and a graduate of the College of Physicians and Surgeons [now the graduate medical school of Columbia University] in Manhattan.
He had briefly practiced medicine in Lambertville, Hunterdon County, N.J., but relocated his practice to Succasunna, Morris County, N.J. sometime before the outbreak of the Civil War. After the war, he returned to his practice in Succasunna.
Dr. James Reiley died on March 23, 1872, at the age of 42, in Succasunna, "where he had enjoyed an extensive practice for twenty years."
