Bernard Weldon Ponder

Bernard Weldon (B.W.) Ponder, 86, of Loma Linda, California, passed away Sunday, December 5, 2004, at Jerry L. Pettis Memorial VA Medical Center in Loma Linda, California. He was born September 28, 1918 in the Hebron Community of San Augustine County, East Texas, and grew up in that community.

He moved to Galveston, Texas in 1936 when he enlisted in the Army and joined the 69th Coast Artillery Battalion stationed at Ft. Crockett. Through World War II and after, he served in the 20th Coast Artillery, also at Ft. Crockett. He married Ethel M. Vincent in 1940, and they lived in Galveston until 1949, when they moved to La Marque where they lived until Ethel's death in 2001. B.W. was discharged from the army in 1947 with the rank of Master Sergeant.

He then took a job at Union Carbide in Texas City and worked there until retirement in 1981. He was an active and faithful member of the Seventh-Day Activist Church and through the years attended church in both Galveston and Texas City.

He is survived by one daughter, Patsy Ann McArthur of California; three sons, Marvin Ponder and wife Shirley of California; Weldon Ponder and wife Tracy of Austin, Texas and Timothy Ponder and wife Rebecca of Maryland; ten grandchildren, Trevor, Jeff and Mary McArthur of California, Christopher Ponder of New Hampshire, Jonathan and Jennifer Ponder of California, Carrie Ameling of South Carolina, Steven Ponder of Texas, and Rachel and Matthew Ponder of Maryland; two great-grandchildren, Ziyal and Xavier McArthur of California; two brothers, Calvin Ponder of Houston, Texas, and Orin Ponder of San Augustine, Texas.

Visitation will be Sunday, December 12, 2004, from 4:00pm until 8:00pm, at the James Crowder Funeral Home in La Marque. Funeral services will be at 11:00am, Monday, December 13, 2004, at the funeral home. Burial will follow services, at Forest Park East in Webster, Texas.
