Dorothy Lee Hall
August 10, 2021

Sweetwater - Our beloved Dorothy Lee Ammons Hall passed from her earthly life on Tuesday, August 10 at her home in Sweetwater, Texas.

She was born on September 8, 1920 to John Wesley Ammons and Ona Frances (Brewer) Ammons in Fisher County. Raised on a farm near the community of Busby, she relished the life of a farm girl and always enjoyed working outside, digging in the dirt or tending to crops. Her blackberry cobbler from homegrown berries was a favorite among family members.

Her memorial service will be Saturday, August 14 at 11 am in the McCoy Chapel of Memories in Sweetwater. Visitation will take place one hour prior to the service in the McCoy Funeral Home, and a graveside service at 9:30 am at Sweetwater Cemetery.

Dorothy Lee attended school in Busby and graduated from Roby High School in 1937. She attended Texas Tech University for several semesters but suspended schooling to work. She was a bookkeeper in Merkel and taught school in Dodd City for one year.

She married Truman Augustus (Jess) Hall on April 10, 1943 at the Roby Courthouse. Farming was a lifelong interest for both, and their three boys were born during their full-time farming days. They moved to Sweetwater in 1951 when Jess became employed by Lone Star Cement in Maryneal, and their daughter was born in Sweetwater.

Dorothy Lee was a homemaker and substitute teacher until she resumed her college studies at Abilene Christian College, becoming a college student at the same time as her two older children. She graduated from ACC in 1966 with a degree in elementary education and taught in Sweetwater schools until retiring in 1985, primarily as a first-grade teacher.

Dorothy Lee was preceded in death by her husband, parents, and all eight of her brothers and sisters. She was also preceded in death by her granddaughter, Kathryn Lee (Katy) Hall.

She is survived by her children and spouses, Lance (Kathy), James (Donna Kay), Tim (Sheree) and Beth Hall. Also surviving her are eight grandchildren and spouses, David (Jana) Hall, Michael (Amanda) Hall, Andy Hall, Brett Hall, Marcia Hall Jackson (Tyler), Brian Hall, Jonathan Elston (Kelsey), and Whitney Dye (Jacob). She is survived by 11 great-grandchildren and a score of nieces and nephews from the Ammons and Hall families.

There is so much good that could be said of Dorothy Lee, our mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and aunt, but perhaps the best representation of her comes from Philippians 2:3-4: "Do nothing out of selfish ambition or vain conceit. Rather, in humility value others above yourselves, not looking to your own interests but each of you to the interests of the others."

If you wish to make a memorial in honor of Dorothy Lee, the family suggests Cornerstone Christian School at Fourth and Elm Church of Christ, 400 Elm Street in Sweetwater (79556)
