ANN WIDGINS PORTER (Age 83)

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Ann Widgins Porter. She passed after an illness, surrounded by her family, on Sunday, April 19, 2015.
Ann grew up in Crewe and Farmville, VA. She attended Wilmington School of Nursing and graduated with top honors in the state. A resident of the District of Columbia and Northern Virginia since 1954, she became supervisor of the pediatric unit at the old Arlington Hospital. She founded the first medical transcription service in Northern Virginia transcribing dictated medical tapes for doctors in the area. She went on to become the medical Director of the Kiwanis Orthopedic Clinic on the grounds of Sibley Hospital in Washington, DC serving the needs of children with orthopedic difficulties.
She is the loving wife of the late Col. Howard Porter, US Army, devoted mother of Annette Porter, Cherie Mullins (Ellery), Chris Martin, Suzanne Vantine (Scot), David Martin (Jeri) and Jeannette Hennett (Keith), step-mother of Michael Porter, and cherished grandmother of 18 grandchildren. She is also survived by her siblings William Franklin Widgins II (Mazie) and Carolyn Mae Glass (Wayne), and a large extended family as well as many friends.
Relatives and friends are invited to Ann's Life Celebration at Money and King Funeral Home, 171 W. Maple Ave., Vienna, VA on Friday, April 24 from 1 to 3 and 5 to 7 p.m. A Christian Memorial Service will be held at Andrew Chapel United Methodist Church, 1301 Trap Road, Vienna, VA on Saturday, April 25 at 11 a.m. Inurnment will be held at Arlington National Cemetery at a later date. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Alzheimer's Association, www.alz.org in memory of her late husband Howard Porter.
