Born to Isaac and Ann Methley Abel, Ellen's family joined the LDS church and emigrated to the United States in 1863. They arrived in New York City shortly after the battle of Gettysburg, and threaded their way around the Civil War to Utah. Ellen married Thomas G Steele on 15 December 1868, and bore three sons: Thomas, Charles, and John; the last two only survived six months each, and Ellen died a week after John's delivery, probably from causes related to the birth.
