Son of Daniel and Elizabeth Schlabach, he married Sarah Hine.

He and his eldest son, Daniel, enlisted in 1861 in Co. D. of the 61st Regiment and served under Capt. D. J. Taylor for four years.

His second son, Henry, also enlisted and was killed in the battle of Gettysburg.

Two of his sons were killed on the railroad and a son, William, lost his life in the mines.

He had another son, Henry, and daughters:
Mrs. Elizabeth Boyer
Mrs. Allie Williamson
Mrs. Ellen Randall

He was buried in the soldier's lot in Hollenback.
