Mr. Fries, his youngest son and a hired hand, went into the timber early in the morning with a heavy log wagon with the intention of bringing out a large log. While driving along, the team became frightened and uncontrollable and ran away. All three were violently thrown from the wagon. Mr. Fries, more unfortunate than the rest, fell in such a manner that the wheels of the heavy wagon passed across his body, inflicting fatal injuries. He was conveyed to his home as quickly as possible. Every possible effort was made to save his life by the attending physician, but to no avail, death alone relieving him of his agony at 7 o'clock Friday morning. At the time of the accident, Mrs. Fries and her son, Adam, Assessor of Engelmann township, were in Belleville on business. They were called home by telephone, reaching the bedside of the injured man early in the afternoon.
Mr. Fries was born in Hessen Darmstadt, Germany, February 24, 1837, and was brought to this country when but six months old. He was the son of Geo. Fries of Turkey Hill. He leaves surviving, besides his bereaved wife, five children.
He was a member of the Lutheran Evangelical Church. His interment takes place at Mascoutah Tuesday at 2 p.m. to the Mascoutah Cemetery. Services will be held by Rev. Spannuth.
