Though her parents Ervin O. and Susanna Gill Johnson, were natives of Michigan they lived for a time in New Mexico. Tressa and her two brothers, Reynold W. and Bernard E. Johnson were all born there. Later the family moved to Tulsa, Oklahoma, where Tressa married James Quincy Chapman on July 1, 1932.
