H. Hilderbrand, Retired Carpenter Of Marissa, Dies
Howard Hilderbrand, 85-year-old retired Marissa carpenter, died at 1 p.m. yesterday at St. Clement's hospital, Red Bud, after a stroke.
Mr. Hilderbrand, who had lived at Marissa for 50 years, had been in failing health for some time, but six weeks ago yesterday suffered a stroke and was seriously ill since.
Born near Oakdale, Nov. 2, 1866, he was a son of the late Frederick and Abigail Ford Hilderbrand. His father was a native of Germany and his mother of Kentucky. His wife, who survives, was the former Lillie I. McAfee, whom he married at Oakdale, May 29, 1889.
Surviving also are two children, Eva, wife of Brig. Gen. E.H. Roberts, of Battle Creek, Mich., and Chief Warrant Officer Vernon A. Hilderbrand, at Erding Air Force Base, Germany; three grandchildren; three great-grandchildren, and one sister, Mrs. Robert East, Modesta[sic], Calif.
Two sons, two sisters and four brothers preceded him in death.
Funeral services will be held Saturday at 2 p.m. from the Finger funeral home, Marissa, Rev. C. Raymond Johnston of the United Presbyterian church officiating, with interment in Marissa City cemetery.
