Orpha Williams, or Arpie, was born in 1833 to David and Leona Williams. Her first marriage, to an R. W. Smith, occurred on 27 March 1851 in Pike County, Alabama. They were the parents of one son. On 19 October 1855, Arpie married John Earl Griggs in Pike County, Alabama. They were the parents of 12 children.

She was an herb doctor for Union and Confederate soldiers during the Civil War. Arpie was also a midwife.
