OZONA. Feb. 18.-Hiram O. Teague, 78 years old retired irrigation farmer and live stock
trader of Sherwood and a resident of Irion County for almost forty years, was found dead Thursday
morning on the Terrell County ranch of Fayette Schwalbe of Ozona, his son-in-law. There was a
bullet wound in his head and a .30-30 rifle lay nearby. The verdict of the inquest has not been
announced. Mr. Teague had not been in failing health but was subject to frequent spells of
despondency, Mrs. Schwalbe stated.
The body was being brought to Ozona and will be taken to Sherwood for burial sometime
Friday. Surviving are four daughters: Mrs. Fayette Schwalbe of Ozona; Mrs. Lizzie Billings of
Langtry, Mrs. X. B. (Mage) Cox of San Angelo and Mrs. Austin A. Smith of Hope, N. M., and two
sons, John Teague and Joe R. Teague both of Hanford, Cal.
Mr. Teague went to the ranch, fifty miles west of Ozona across the Pecos river with his
grandson, Austin Schwalbe, Wednesday afternoon. He appeared in good spirits upon leaving Ozona
and remarked that he would help them put the garden at the ranch in shape. While one of the three
Schwalbe boys was at the lot feeding the stock Thursday morning, he thought he heard a shot and
reported it to the others, who were awaiting breakfast at the ranch house. Mr. Teague had stepped
out of the·house only a few minutes before. His lifeless body was found a short distance from the
house. The gun that lay near by had been in an automobile.
Mr. Teague came to Ozona last October' to visit the Schwalbe family. Prior to that time he
had resided for four years with his daughter, Mrs. Lizzie Billings, at Langtry. Mr. Teague moved to
Irion County from Bell County in 1884. His first wife, the mother of Mrs. Schwalbe died in Bell
County. His second wife died in Irion County in July, 1889. [He was 82]
