Raymond Eugene “Ray” Shivers died Wednesday, March 18, 2015 at Harry Hynes Memorial Hospice unit at Via Christi St. Francis in Wichita, Kansas from complications from heart surgery earlier this year.

Raymond Eugene Shivers was born in Industry, Kansas on November 10, 1936, the first of five sons born to Gerald Maurice Shivers and Mary Virginia Pickering Shivers. Ray attended country schools in the Milford/Wakefield area of Kansas and graduated with the class of 1954 from Milford High School. He married Darlene E. Walters at a young age and they were the parents of six children. They separated and divorced after 20 years of marriage.

Ray had moved with his young family to south central Kansas in the mid 60’s and he made his home in Wellington, Belle Plaine, Wichita and then Winfield, where he resided from 1977 until his death on March 18, 2015.

Ray and Carroll Walker Barner were united in marriage on November 26, 1975 in Montgomery, Alabama.

Ray worked at various jobs during his work life. He was a truck driver, union iron worker, salesman, fertilizer plant manager, aircraft engineering technician, and welder, and through all those jobs he stayed close to his farming/ranching roots and always had horses and/or cattle to care for. He worked for others, but was happiest when he was working for himself or on a project of his own design.

Ray was an active member of Grandview United Methodist Church in Winfield, Kansas.

Ray was preceded in death by his parents Jerry and Virginia Shivers, a brother Gail Shivers, and a grandson, Robert Pope.

Ray is survived by his wife of 39 years, Carroll of the home, three sons, Mike and Mark (Becke) Shivers both of Belle Plaine, Kansas, and Mitch (Rene) Shivers of Emporia, Kansas, three daughters, Marlene Salsman of Winfield, Kansas, Melissa Shivers of Newkirk, Oklahoma, and Mae (Bill) Smith of Andover, Kansas, two step-sons, Steve (LaDonna) Barner of Eufaula, Oklahoma, and Mark (Tami) Barner of Bixby, Oklahoma, 16 grandchildren, Amy (Chance) Kirkland, Travis Shivers, Dan (Melissa) Salsman, Natosha Shivers Pope, Ashley (James) Sherman, Chelsi and Mitchell Shivers, Aubrey and Devon Shivers, Caleb Neeley, Zach Barner, Axel (Ashley) Barner, Tulsa Barner, Raven Barner, Jade Barner, and Sage Barner, 12 great grandchildren, Brittany and Kelsey Estrada, Baleigh, Sierra and Kodi Salsman, Satori Shivers, Makayla and Adelyn Sherman, Scarlett Kirkland, Dalli and Dixie Barner, and Kolbie Shivers, 3 brothers, Stan (Barb) Shivers of Overland Park, Kansas, Jim Shivers of Kansas City, Missouri, and Jerry Shivers of Coucil Grove, Kansas. Also left to mourn his passing are numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, aunts, uncles, and friends.

Memorial services will be held on Saturday, March 28, 2015 at 2:00 P.M. at Grandview United Methodist Church. Private family inurnment will take place at a later date. Miles Funeral Service is in charge of arrangements.

A memorial has been established in Ray’s name for Grandview United Methodist Church. Contributions may be made through the funeral home.
