Funeral services for John Andrew Schulmeister will be 11:30 a.m. Monday Oct. 16, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, with the Rev. Frederick C Fangmann officiating. Burial will be in Woodlawn Cemetary, with military graveside rites performed by the Oelwein American Legion Ross Reid Post 9.

Friends may call from 2 until 8 p.m. Sunday at Jamison-Schmitz Funeral Home, Oelwein, where there will be a rosary at 4 p.m. and a parish scripture service at 7 p.m.
Mr. Schulmeister, 73, died Thursday evening, Oct. 12, 2000, at University of Iowa Hospital and Clinics, Iowa City,
after a long illness.

He was born July 13, 1927, in Oelwein, the son of Jacob and Anna E. (Urban) Schulmeister. He attended Sacred Heart Catholic School and was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II. He married Barbara June Vanter on June 30, 1948, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Oelwein. John was a machine operator at John Deere Tractor Works, Waterloo Iowa, for 38 1/2 years, retiring in December 1984. He was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church and United Auto Workers, Local No. 838. He had formerly been involved with the Boy Scouts. He also enjoyed fishing and boating at Prairie du Chien, Wis.

Survivors include his wife, Barbara; five daughters, Shirley (Lee) Flint of Palmdale, Calif., Jane (Ross) Starr of Maquoketa, Lynn (Bob) Davis of El Cajon, Calif., Frances (Art) Quario of Haw River, N.C., and Barbie Shaffer of Oelwein; three sons, David (Bernadette) of Dorrance Kan., Kenneth (Elaine) of Fayette, and Paul (Wendy) of Sumner; 20 grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; one brother, George (Jeannie) of Oelwein; three sisters, Julie (Florian) Koch of Oelwein, Marjorie (Warren) Inman of Denver, and Mary (Don) Mouer of Tampa, Fla; and his
mother-in-law, Marian Thiele of Oelwein.

He was preceded in death by his parents; four brothers, Joseph, Peter, Jacob and an infant, John "Sonny"; and four sisters, Anne Vande Vorde, Barbara Hefner, and two in infancy.
