Sarah Leora Proudfit was born near Enfield, White County, Illinois, the second child born to James Boggs and Virginia Linder Proudfit. She married Felix Robinson on April 24, 1901, at her parents' home in Mill Shoals township, White County, Illinois. They had three children: Blanche Irene, James Thomas, and Felix Maurice.

Felix trained as a civilian government engineer. His work took the family to Vancouver, Washington in about 1909. In the 1920s they moved to Camp Lewis, Washington and then to Steilacoom, Washington.
