Mrs. Julian was born on March 18, 1944, in Sulphur Springs, the first born daughter to Joseph Burroughs Ames, Sr. and Mary Sue Shelton Ames. She attended Austin Elementary School. Mary attended Sulphur Springs High School where she was a proud member of the Hi King Klub (HKK), and graduated in 1962. She continued her studies at East Texas State University, Commerce Texas.

Mary Elizabeth Ames married Jay William Julian, Sr. (J.W.) on January 23, 1965, in Saint James Catholic Church, Sulphur Springs, Texas, with Reverend Raymond J. Scott officiating. Together they reared two children, Jay William Julian, Jr., born April 29, 1967, and John Patrick Julian, born February 20, 1969. Mary was a homemaker while raising her children.

J. W. and Mary, along with a partner, bought the Home Place Mobile Home Park that was located on N. E. Loop 301, in Sulphur Springs, in 1972. The mobile home park consisted of 26 acres and had 19 rental lots along with two club houses, tennis court, and a 76,000 gallon swimming pool. J. W. and Mary managed Home Place Mobile Home Park and Mary was the bookkeeper right up until it was sold to an out of state investor in 1988. At the time Home Place Mobile Home Park was sold, the family had expanded the park to 85 rental lots and it was 100% full on the day it sold. The business was a family owned and operated success story.

Once her children got older, Mary decided to seek employment outside the family business so in 1981, Mary Julian began her thirty plus year banking career at Sulphur Springs State Bank where she started in the bookkeeping department. With encouragement from her supervisor and mentor, E. A. Junell, Jr., Mary progressed quickly and was promoted to bookkeeping supervisor and shortly thereafter was assigned the supervision of the proof department. At one time, Mary managed the largest department in the bank and had 25 employees under her direct supervision. Mary Julian retired from banking in December 2011.

Mary Julian was known to her family and friends for her passion for cooking. While raising her children, the meals were always created from scratch and were very well balanced. Everyone at the bank where she worked and her family at family reunions and gatherings always looked forward to eating her creations. Some delicious delights that Mary will always be remembered for are her beautiful and tasty salads, her cucumber sandwiches, chili, and her fantastic Hopkins County Stew. Everything she prepared was beautifully garnished and was a representation of her love for food, family and friends. Mary knew well that food brought people and family together, so she invested herself in cooking and delighted in it.

Mary Elizabeth Ames Julian had three siblings; Joseph B. Ames, Jr., John Shelton Ames, who preceded her in death in 2008, and Samantha Sue Ames Whiting.

Mary's mother, Mary Sue Shelton Ames, attended First United Methodist Church and Mary's father, Joseph, attended Saint James Catholic Church. All of the Ames children were raised Catholic and Mary remained strong in her faith throughout her entire life. Mary raised her sons in the Catholic faith in Saint James Catholic Church.

Mary was a courageous breast cancer survivor. Mary detected her own breast cancer and that early detection allowed her doctors to remove it quickly while the cancer was small and confined. Mary had fifty-two rounds of radiation treatments and got through them with high spirits and beat her breast cancer.

Mary passed away from pneumonia in Hopkins County Memorial Hospital in Sulphur Springs, Texas at approximately 6:44 p.m. surrounded by her sons and family members on March 13, 2014, just five days shy of her seventieth birthday. Funeral mass of Christian burial was held at Saint James Catholic Church, Sulphur Springs, Texas, Wednesday, March 18, 2014, at 10:00 a.m with Deacon Jerry Besze officiating and interment followed at Restlawn Memorial Park, Sulphur Springs. Pallbearers were Jay W. Julian, Jr., John P. Julian, Joseph B. Ames, Jr., Jason Ames, and Danny Blount. Honorary pallbearers were E. A. Junell, Jr., Sammy Tatum, and Marvin T. Duval. West Oaks Funeral Home was in charge of the arrangements.
