A SUDDEN CALL.. C. J. C. BEDMAN DIES WHILE LOADING HAY ON HIS FARM Death's summons came most unexpectedly yesterday afternoon to Charles J. C. Bedman, the well known Lake Ida farmer. During the day he had been engaged in his usual farm work, and about half past four o'clock had left his home for a second load of hay which he had been engaged in hauling from a stack a short distance from the house. Not returning at the expected time, Mrs. Bedman went in search of her husband and made the sad discovery of his sudden death. Mrs. Bedman had evidently been preparing to leave the place of loading. He had driven the knife fork into the load and this effort, following the exertion of loading, had been fatal. He sank over the knife and was there found by his sorrowing wife.
Assistance was secured from a neighbor, Mr. Floding, and Dr. Haskell of Alexandria was called. Dr. Haskell immediately answered the call, reaching the Bedman home about six o'clock. All efforts to resuscitate Mr. Bedman proved futile. Death had resulted from heart failure, Mr. Bedman having in the last few years complained of trouble of that nature. That same morning he had spoken to Mrs. Bedman of feeling some pain about the heart.
Mr. Bedman was one of the earlier settlers of Douglas County, having come here in 1859 from Michigan with his parents, when but a mere lad. He was fifty three years of age, Born on March 9, 1856, in the state of New Jersey, of English parentage. He was married in 1891 and leaves, besides his bereaved widow, one son of about twelve years of age. For many years past, Mr. Bedman and family have resided on the south shore of Lake Ida, his home being the resort of many of the summer tourists.
Deputy Coroner Evens made an official visit to the home this morning. The cause of death was so apparent that he took no further proceedings.
The funeral will be held Saturday at eleven o'clock from the home at Lake Ida. Interment in Kinkead Cemetery.
