George E. Arnett, 49, of ... died Tuesday at a local hospital after a long illness. Services will be Friday at 10 a.m. at Trinity United Methodist Church. The Rev. William Doran will officiate. Burial will be in Westlawn Cemetery. Visitation will be... at Livingston-Sondermann Funeral Home. Memorials are suggested to the American Cancer Society.

Mr. Arnett was born Aug. 8, 1934, at Phillips, the son of Charles and lela Dixon Arnett. He grew up and received his education at Phillips and served in the U.S. Army with the Military Police in Hawaii. He then farmed for his mother until joining the Grand Island Fire Department in 1957. He was made a captain in March 1965, a fire marshal in July 1971 and became fire chief March 1, 1973, retaining that position until his death. He married Judy Bowman on Sept. 23, 1983, in Grand Island. They made their home here. He was a member of the Platt-Deutsche Society, the Grand Island American Legion post and the International Fighters Association.

Survivors include his widow; two sons, Scott of Wichita, Kan., and Jason of Grand Island; a daughter, Amy Arnett, stationed in Hawaii; three stepchildren...; two brothers, Orville of Aurora and Charles of Phillips; four sisters, Mrs. Alvin (Dorothy) Purdy of Phillips, Mrs. Herb (Eunice) Debban of Kennewick, Wash., Mrs. Terry (Opal) Ackerman of Jordan Valley, Ore., and Mrs. Leonard (Wilma) Debban of Hastings, his mother and a grandson, Jason. He was preceded in death by his father, a sister and a brother.
