Caleb enlisted in Company B of the 89th Illinois Infantry on August 13, 1862, at Franklin County, Illinois, along with his older brother, Stephen. On the paperwork for Co. B, he is listed as being 5'10" with light hair, blue eyes and a light complexion. He was mustered into service on August 25, 1862, at Chicago. On August 27, 1862, he was transferred to Company D of the 89th Illinois Infantry. On the paperwork for Co. D, he is listed as being 5'6" with brown hair, hazel eyes and a fair complexion. He was captured at the Battle of Chickamauga in Georgia on September 20, 1863, and later exchanged. On July 22, 1865, he was mustered out of service in Springfield, Illinois.
