Clay was born to David Carter Lawson and Mary Jane Brown Lawson.He was one of nine brothers and sisters. Clay's family moved from Tennessee to Kannapolis NC when Clay was around 11 years old. Shortly after the move his mother died and about a year later his father re-married. At around age thirteen he moved to the Greensboro NC area where he was taken into the care of his oldest brother Carl Lawson. After marrying Nellie Louise Gray, he lived in the Earlanger Cotton Mill village in Lexington NC. During his stay here he and his wife worked in the mill and he took correspondence courses in radio repair. Once entering the Navy, Clay served as a Radioman during WWII. After the war he was a traveling salsmen and sold radios. Due to his intelect he earned the nickname "Professer" but was more affectionatly called "Grandpa Fessor" by his grandchildren.
