Susannah Jane Leslie was born in 1818 in Carroll County, Ohio, likely the daughter of Joseph Leslie and Nancy Galloway. In 1840, she married Thomas Joel Fletcher, an Englishman. In 1848, the couple moved to Iowa, with their six children in tow. From there they moved to Missouri before coming west across the Oregon Trail with seven children and Susannah pregnant. They settled at the head of Lacamas Lake, but traded their land to another settler for Lady's Island. The flood of 1861 destroyed part of their house along with a brick oven and a woodshed. It is said that Susannah was a capable midwife who once assisted the wife of the local chief in childbirth. Sometime prior to 1870, Thomas left Susannah and married another woman.

Behold wake with the dawning light
