Memorial service held for Lt.Col. Wendell Bailey

Retired Lt. Col. Wendell Bailey, 69, died Thursday, January 31, 1991 in Colorado Springs, Colorado. He served in the Air Force for 29 years before retiring.

Wendell was born January 30, 1922 in Monticello, Utah. His education included Grand County High in Moab; Mesa Junior College in Grand Junction, Colorado; Washington State College in Pullman, Washington; San Francisco State College; American International College and Air War College in Montgomery, Alabama.

Lt. Col. Bailey was a veteran of World War II and the Vietnam War. He had received various honors and awards including the Legion of Merit for his work at CINCPAC headquarters in Hawaii. He flew 191 sorties in Vietnam, where he was the commander of the 311th Special Operations Squadron. Wendell had lived in Colorado Springs since retiring in 1971 and had owned Bailey Realty and Investments since 1975.

Wendell was married for 47 years to Margaret Ellen (Wertz) Bailey who survives. He is also survived by their daughters, Jan Papy of Calabasas, California, Wendy Bailey of Seattle, Washington and Marta Amirani of Colorado Springs, Colo. Two sons survive, Jon Bailey of Huntington Beach, Calif.; and Rod Bailey of San Diego, Calif.; and one grandson Todd Papy of Calabasas, Calif.

Also surviving are two sisters; Genevieve Miller of Moab and Donna Babbitt of Corvallis, Oregon; four brothers, Claron Bailey, Kedric Bailey, Ivan L. Bailey of Moab and Baxter Bailey of Laguna Niguel, Calif. Wendell was preceded in death by his father, C.E. Bailey, mother, Essie Bailey and sister Lorene Hood.

Wendell will be warmly remembered for his love, dedication and service to family, country and friends, and his never ending search for knowledge to help mankind. His life was celebrated at a Memorial Service held February 2nd. in Moab, Utah.
