JOHN WESLEY GODBEY, 95, of Hutchinson, Kan., went to his heavenly home Wednesday, May 10, 2006, in Thorne Care Center, Wesley Towers in Hutchinson.
Memorial service will be at 2 p.m. Saturday in Trinity United Methodist Hester Chapel with the Rev. Nick Warner officiating. Arrangements are under direction of Elliott Mortuary of Hutchinson.
He was born Feb. 12, 1911, in Ellis, Kan., to John Wesley and Luella Williams Godbey. He graduated from Salina High School in 1929. He married the love of his life, Junette Leona Hed, on Sept. 11, 1931, in Abilene, Kansas. They celebrated 72 wonderful years together. She preceded him in death Oct. 19, 2002.
He was a local manager at KPL for 45 years, from 1931 to 1976, working at Blue Rapids, St. Mary's, and spending most of his career in Hoisington, Kan. He was a member of Trinity United Methodist Church. He was "Mr. Methodist," actively participating in United Methodist churches wherever he lived.
John was a 50-year member of the Lions Club, a 32nd degree Mason, and a member of the Scottish Rite Masonic Lake Lodge No. 50 in Silver Lake, Kan., for 61 years. He was also a member of the ISIS Shrine in Salina, Kan. After retirement, he moved to Tucson, Ariz. for 15 years, then to Duncan, Okla. for six years, and was a Wesley Towers resident for the last eight years.
He was preceded in death by four brothers, Richard, James, Robert and William "Bill" Godbey; and two sisters, Mary Katherine Beisner and Frances Williams.
