Everard C. Brewer was a native of the state of Maine. There he thoroughly learned the ship building trade from his father and grandfather then later going to sea. In the early 1890's he was employed in the ship building industry at Providence, Rhode Island, where he remained for several years. He then joined the New Jersey Dry Dock and Transporation Co. at Elizabethport, New Jersey, acting as superintendent of the plant. In 1899 he came to Staten Island, New York and established the Brewer Dry Dock Company which became very successful. During World War I the company was active in building and repairing harbor craft of all descriptions, in this way doing its share in helping the war efforts. He joined forces with Arthur J. Grymes in 1918 and in 1923 acquired the Johnson Shipyard Corp. of Staten Island and the two firms merged. Mr. Brewer died May 1925 and Mr. Grymes took over the company.
