The son of George & Barbara Kane, in 1860 he was a laborer living with his widowed mother in Washington Borough, Lancaster County, Pennsylvania. He stood 5' 6" tall and had light hair and gray eyes.

A Civil War veteran, he enlisted and mustered into federal service at Lancaster September 2, 1864, as a private with Co. H, 203rd Pennsylvania Infantry, and honorably discharged with his company June 22, 1865.

He married Anna lnu. and fathered Catharine (b. @1869), Laura (b. @1871), Rebecca R. K. (b. 02/20/73 - married John Summerfield Deale Auld), and Barbara (b. @1874). In 1888, he lived in Columbia, Lancaster County, but applied for his pension three years later from Maryland.

On April 12, 1928, a Mrs. Margie Black applied for a federally funded tombstone for his grave.
