Bud Varnum passed in peace on December 4th, 2014. He was known for being an avid huntsman, man of honor, devoted husband to his wife of 43 years, Sue Varnum and supportive father of their two children Jon and Tary Varnum. Bud was born in Sparks, NV in 1947 to Red and June Varnum. He was the eldest of two children. He enjoyed working at his father's boat shop and ranching in Fallon, NV while growing up. Always an outdoorsman, Bud also discovered his love of service to others. He earned his Eagle Scout and became an RCA bull rider and team roper. As a true cowboy, the thrills of the rodeo occupied much of his free time. That is, until he met the love of his life, Sue. Sue was an elegant young woman, who shared his love of horses, in a much different capacity, with her passion for showing Arabians. Bud and Sue's friendship quickly turned to love and the couple were married on Valentine's Day 1971. Bud's mutual calling to be of service and to ranch were conflicted in these early years. He worked on the UNR dairy farm before moving to Lovelock to work for the Cottonwood Cattle Co. and Nevada Nile Corporation. His desire to be of service won out and he joined the Nevada Air Guard full time in 1977. Over his 32 years of service, Bud mentored many an airman, saved lives as a volunteer fire fighter for the Pleasant Valley Fire Department, and volunteered with Washoe Co. Search and Rescue. He always carved out time for family and dedicated hours of love, support, and teaching to his two children. Bud developed into a wise man and honed his hunting/outdoorsman skills during these years. His patriotism knew no bounds, earning him metals while deploying to Korea, South America, Operation Enduring Freedom, Desert Storm, Panama, and many other deployment destinations. He enjoyed the growth of his family to include grandchildren Andrew Botts, Ash, and Tamsin Varnum. Even after his retirement from the Guard in 2003, this decorated veteran never wanted to slow down. He worked for the City of Reno, Washoe County, and State of Nevada. He spent many years enjoying his deep love and appreciation for hunting, fishing, camping, and family time. Shaping the lives of all he touched with laughter, kindness, mentoring, and endless support. How fortunate we are to have been touched by your gifts. Bud, you will remain forever in our hearts and live on in the joy of our memories.

Bud is survived by his wife, Sue, his children, Tary and Jon, his brother, Rick, his grandchildren, and numerous nieces and nephews.

Please join us in celebrating Bud's life and accomplishments.
