Age 80 years Gun Shot Suicide
Pasadena Star-News 26 Apr 1932 Part 2 p 13:
Elderly Man Succeeds in Ending Life -- J.W. Stultz Found Dead in Car Parked on Street Close to Arroyo --
J. W. Stultz, La Canada grocer who tried to jump from the Colorado street bridge on April 22, this noon shot himself in the mouth with a 12-gauge shotgun, instantly ending his life. The man took his life while sitting in the same car which he drove to the Colorado street bridge last Friday, when a La Canada valley friend pulled him back from the railing of the bridge. The body was found today in the car, in front of 1038 Prospect Boulevard, a single barreled shotgun still leaning against the dead man.
This was his third attempt at suicide this year, according to friends. Earlier in the winter the man attempted to take his life by turning on the gas, it was stated. Friends rescued him at that time.
The man left a note in which he stated that he felt that his life work had been accomplished and that he was ready and eager to go. From the trend of the note it was evident that he was laboring under the delusion that some persons wanted him out of the way.
Mr. Stultz, who was about 80 years old is survived by his wife, two daughters, Mrs. E. Metzger, of Detroit, and Mrs. A. Arbison [sic] of Los Angeles; and one son, John Stultz, of Los Angeles. He had been a resident of the La Canada Valley for many years. His intimates there have felt for a considerable time that he was not in his normal state of mind, but in spite of the close watch kept on him he has several times eluded watchers and finally succeeded in killing himself.
That the deed today was carefully planned is shown by the fact that the man attached a string around the trigger of the gun so that he could shoot without removing the trigger guard and use a foot to discharge the weapon.

[The son? John Stultz mentioned in the article is unknown and unidentified, if he existed. His known children are Henry Clarence, Edna Bell, Robert Lester, Gertrude Cecille, Neil Dyer and Edward Elliot.]
