John was born in Germany. His father died when he was three years old,after which he lived with his aunt (Anna Maria Grebner), he(Johannes Grebner) and his aunt and others was listed as passengers on a ship which docked in Baltmore from Bremen Germany on August 16 1846 from there he went to Lancaster Co.PA, he remained till he reached the age of maternity, (he apparently naturalized as John Grabner Febuary 3 1855 in Lancaster Co. PA), then he can to Wayne Co.IN. He return to Lancaster Co.and married Mary Ann Illges in June of 1858, he brought his bride back to Wayne Co. where he bought a farm of eighty acres but, tragedy struck the young couple, John's wife died that same year. Jan.29 1860, he was married to Anna Herr, a native of Lancaster Co.PA, she was the daughter of Christian and Elizabeth Shank Herr who came to Indiana in the early day. They had 5 children Elizabeth H, Mary E, Amanda G. Anne G. and Christian Hans. In August 1881 John was thrown from a wagon and received injuries which took his life three days later. He was one of the most successful stock-risers in the township,making a specialty of cattle and hogs. He had at his death a valuable farm of 400 acres.
