Thomas Chilton was born about 1699, in Cople Parish, Westmoreland County, Virginia, the son of John Chilton, II and Lettice Mary Ball.

Thomas married Jemima Cooke in 1723 in Fauquier County, Virginia. Jemima was born about 1707 in Ware, Gloucester County, Virginia, the daughter of Mordecai and Elizabeth (Buckner) Cooke. Thomas and Jemima had the following known children:

1. Mary (Chilton) Ransdell (1724-1788)
2. Hannah (Chilton) Sturman (1726-1792)
3. Thomas Chilton (1728-1776)
4. William Maidstone Chilton (1730-1775)
5. John Chilton (1739-1777)
6. Stephen Chilton (1743-?)
7. Elizabeth Chilton
