Crushed to Death Under Stone Truck
Lester W Haugh, 20, son of Mr and Mrs John Haugh, Goram, was fatally injured at 8:30 o’clock Saturday morning when he was pinned beneath the loaded stone truck he was operating, overturned on the New Bridgeville-York Furnace road near St Luke’s church. The stone was to be used on a WPA project near York Furnace.
Haugh, who sustained a crushed pelvis and other internal injuries, died at 7:40 o’clock yesterday morning at the York hospital where he was sent by Dr H M Holland, Red Lion, who rendered first aid treatment.
Dr L U Zech, coroner, accompanied by State Highway Patrolman J J Nork began a probe into the fatality which showed that Haugh, accompanied by Preston Kohler, a son of Irvin Kohler, owner of the truck, attempted to pass another truck fitted with stone operated by J Edward Abel, East Prospect, when the accident occurred.
Kohler told the coroner that Abel would not yield the right of way and Haugh lost control of his vehicle which struck a soft gutter on the left side of the road, swerved across to the gutter on the right side and overturned. Haugh was thrown beneath the truck. Kohler escaped injury in the accident.
Abel told investigating authorities that he did not hear the horn on Haugh’s truck and was not aware that he wished to pass him. The coroner will continue his investigation today.
Surviving the deceased are his parents, Mr and Mrs John Haugh; three brothers, Harry W Haugh, Airville; Raymond Haugh and Paul Haugh, both at home.
The funeral will be held Wednesday with brief services at the house at 1 pm and further services at the house at the Bethel Methodist Episcopal church, near Shenks Ferry, Rev J M Pheasant, pastor, will officiate. Interment will be made in the cemetery adjoining the church. Funeral Director Furnace B Olewiler, Red Lion, removed the body from the hospital to his funeral home and prepared it for burial.
