Doyle L. Dietterick Sr., 95, of Berwick passed away Wednesday, Feb. 4, 2015, in Berwick Hospital Center.
Born in Evansville on July 24, 1919, he was the son of the late Lester C. and Maude D. (Grasley) Dietterick. He attended school in the Evansville one-room schoolhouse, as well as Coughlin High School, Wilkes-Barre. He was a veteran of the U.S. Navy, serving in both the Atlantic and Pacific Theatres, during World War II. After being honorably discharged, he worked at the Berwick AC&F until it closed, after which he operated his own gas and service station in Berwick.
He was a former member of Evansville EUB Church. During his teen years, he served two terms in the Civilian Conservation Corps, where he was involved in forestry work in Pennsylvania and New Mexico. He served on the Berwick Borough Council and was also a member of the VFW, Nescopeck, where he served as a past commander. He enjoyed fishing and traveling.
He married Ceola Lydia Nuss on June 16, 1941. They were married nearly 54 years when she passed away on March 10, 1995. Doyle was the last member of his immediate family. Preceding him in death were his sisters, Constance June O’Neil, and Mary Alice Stecker; and brother, Seymour C. Dietterick.
He will be greatly missed by his three sons: Richard C. Laubach and wife, Nancy, Conyngham; Lester J. Dietterick, Berwick; and Doyle L. Dietterick Jr. and wife, Barbara, Bloomsburg; as well as grandchildren: Wesley, Sherry and Barbara; great-grandchildren: Joel, Wassen, Nikki, Andrew, Brett, and Jessica; and great-great-grandchildren: Paige, Lilly, Olivia, Tyler, Aurora, Wyatt, and Garett.
A private burial will take place in Elan Memorial Park, Lime Ridge.
